Scarborough School District - News and Information

Welcome to Scarborough, Maine, USA

Located on the scenic coast of southern Maine, six miles southwest of Portland, Scarborough Schools provide services to students from kindergarten to adult education practicing its philosophy of offering quality education for all eligible members of the community. Students learn in a positive atmosphere where dedicated educators strive to meet individual student needs throughout the school year and beyond.

Learning begins for students in kindergarten through second grade at one of three primary schools; Blue Point, Pleasant Hill, and Eight Corners. Wentworth Intermediate School fosters understanding for children in grades 3 through 5, preparing them for the academic and social programs that await them at Scarborough Middle School (grades 6-8). Scarborough High School offers courses and activities to students in grades 9-12, with one of the largest academic, athletic, and co-curricular programs in Maine.

Letter to the Editor:

Scarborough’s School Budget – Smart and Responsible

Editor:

As members of the Scarborough Board of Education, our mission is to advocate for the children of Scarborough by adopting a “kids first” educational program, policies and a responsible budget. Through the efforts of the School’s Superintendent, Leadership Team and the School Board, a very thoughtful and well planned mission critical budget was developed and finalized. Over the course of many hours and countless meetings the budget being brought forward to the citizens is a solid budget for Scarborough schools. The School Board and Town Council both have approved the budget.

With the reductions in Federal and State funding, we have been faced with a large task. How do we best serve our students while being mindful of the community at large? Through thoughtful planning and the education mission in mind, the School’s Leadership Team, School Board and Town Council have come together to make a recommendation to move this budget forward for the town validation vote. This budget aims to rebuild and strengthen existing programs, restore some of those that have been reduced in the past, and provide for those areas needed to prepare our students for success in their future educational endeavors and career paths. The budget is a combination of reallocation of current resources, some incremental additions as well as a delay of some purchases and an overall trimming of line items.

On behalf of the Scarborough School Board,
Christine Massengill, Bob Mitchell, Chairs of the Finance and Board respectively.

Dr. George H. Entwistle  Scarborough Superintendent of Schools

Why the School Calendar change for 2012-2013? The new 2012-2013 school calendar, most importantly, restores precious instructional time (equivalent to one full school day) back to our academic year.  The disruptions created by early releases to after-school activities for students in grades 3-12 are eliminated by moving to late starts.  Late starts also create school days that are more like typical school days, allowing students to move from school into their afternoon activities as they normally do.  The after-school availability of teachers, as well, will be uninterrupted by late starts.    The revised calendar supports a bold, new model of professional development for our staff.  We are excited about adopting a professional learning team (PLT) design that has been proven to be the most effective model for improving instruction and student learning outcomes.  Late starts support this new PLT model while eliminating the inconvenience and disruption of mid-workday student releases.  Recognizing that late starts, too, require parents to plan for their students, the amount of unscheduled/unstructured time we experienced with early releases will be reduced by approximately one-half with late starts. Overall, these changes (including the reduction of one full staff development day from the calendar), compress the school calendar…making an after-Labor-Day-start-of-school for students possible. We are very excited about the improvements created by the new calendar and we will monitor and evaluate its effectiveness throughout next year.
WENTWORTH INTERMEDIATE BUILDING PROJECT In November 2011, the residents of Scarborough overwhelmingly approved a referendum to build a new Wentworth Intermediate School.      LINDBLAD EXPEDITIONS AND NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS  ANNOUNCE 2012 GROSVENOR TEACHER FELLOWS Program Supported by Oracle and Google Sends 14 Educators to Explore Arctic Svalbard as Outdoor Classroom for Professional Development  WASHINGTON (April 25, 2012) Fourteen respected educators have been selected as this year's National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellows. The fellowships are awarded to teachers who best demonstrate excellence in geography education. This is the sixth year of the Fellows program, established to honor former National Geographic Society Chairman Gilbert M. Grosvenor's lifetime commitment to geographic education.  Funding for the fellowships was donated in perpetuity to the National Geographic Society by Sven-Olof Lindblad and Lindblad Expeditions to mark Grosvenor's 75th birthday in 2006 and to honor his service in enhancing and improving geographic education across the United States. Additional support for the program is provided by Oracle and Google.  Each year, K-12 educators from around the country are encouraged to apply for this one-of-a-kind professional development opportunity. The object is to enhance their geographic learning through direct experience and to bring that knowledge back to their classrooms. The 2012 Fellows, who will be embarking this summer on a Lindblad Expeditions voyage to Arctic Svalbard, Include: Emily Sherman, a life science and environmental science teacher at Scarborough High School in Scarborough, Maine, who works with the Schoodic Education and Research Center of Acadia National Park to involve her students in research on mercury contamination. She recently received a Noyce Master Teacher Fellowship for bringing biology case studies into the classroom.
