Scarborough offers a supplemental
Math Support program in its three primary schools. Under the direction
of Gale Raymond our Math Support Teacher, Caroline Barker,
Math Support Education Technician, deliver small group and individualized
instructions
in which students are actively engaged in mathematics lessons.
Math Support is offered to first and second grade students who are identified as needing
additional math instruction. Students are screened using a tool that focuses on oral
counting (both forward and back), number identification and computational
strategies which include 1:1 correspondence. When students qualify for Math Support,
specific Math Recovery interventions are used to address the areas of concern.
Student growth is followed along a developmental continuum of stages similar to
that used in literacy. Students are dismissed/graduate from Math Support when
classroom assessments show they are working at a competent level in number/number
sense and computation. |
