Superintendent's Letter
Dear Parents and Citizens,
Scarborough is a rapidly growing community committed to the well
being of all citizens. Its schools are an integral part of community
life providing both children and adults with a broad range of social,
cultural and educational opportunities.
Scarborough's school system is housed in modern facilities at strategic
locations throughout the community. Its educational programs are
student centered with choice being an essential part of the school
systems philosophy. At our primary, intermediate and middle school
phases children and parents have a choice of either graded or three-year
multiage educational programs. Scarborough High School offers a
diverse curriculum with a range of options including advanced placement
courses and state of the art vocational education at two regional
vocational/technical schools.
Student athletic, art and academic success are recognized at the
regional, state and national levels. Athletes compete in a variety
of sports including soccer,
football, cheering, cross-country, indoor and outdoor track, basketball,
ice hockey, baseball, softball, tennis, golf and lacrosse. The Scarborough
school system's commitment to the visual and performing arts is
as impressive as its athletic programs. Student programs include
choral and band in grades five through twelve, a wide range of visual
art opportunities culminating with a week long art show for the
public in the spring of each year and several theater productions
at the high school. Academic success include 90% of the seniors
going on to post secondary education, a designation by the Portland
Press Herald that Scarborough High School is one of the top twenty
high schools in the state as measured by its performance on the
Maine Educational Assessment, and numerous Academic Decathlon and
speech and debate state championships.
Perhaps our school system's greatest asset is the exceptionally
strong commitment of teachers and staff. With parents as partners,
the faculty strives to meet the individual needs of students. The
staff also works industriously to insure that the schools are a
safe and a desirable place for learning.
You are cordially invited to observe our programs and activities
in Scarborough's schools. Please contact the school principal to
make individual arrangements for your visit. If you wish to talk
with the superintendent or any of the Central Office staff, please

Sincerely yours,
