Jazz BandJazz band is an after school activity. Students learn to improvise, play a 12 bar blues, and learn to play jazz phrasing. The middle school jazz band usually has three to five gigs a year. |
Math TeamAnyone in grades 6-8 can try out for the math team. Practices are on
Thursday from 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. each week. There are five or six meets
at each grade level throughout the year. Our school competes with other
schools in Maine from Augusta to Kittery. This is a great team to be on
if you love math. |
ChorusDo you like to sing? If you do, chorus is a great group to join. They
meet every Wednesday and practice three songs to perform at the band concerts.
Chorus is open to everyone, boys and girls. |
Builders ClubThe Builders Club is an awesome way to help the community or even make
more friends. There is a meeting one day a week. Many people ask in the
Builders Club, “Do you actually build stuff?” The answer would
be no. You make your community a better place. For instance last year
the Builders Club had a babysitting day. We made a lot of money and donated
it to the soup kitchen in Portland. Says one Builders Club member, “We
had a lot of fun and helped our community.” |
Computer ClubIf you love working with computers, you will want to join the Computer
Club. Mrs. Walker teaches advanced computer tricks, and you can make friends
with other people who like the same thing. This club meets every Wednesday
from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Be there or be square! |
Civil RightsThe Civil Rights Team plans events for special days, such as Martin Luther
King Jr. and Women’s History Month. It makes you feel good inside
knowing that you made a difference. The team meets every other Thursday
during homeroom. |
Drama ClubThere is a school club for 6th – 8th graders called the Drama Club which puts on plays for the school and for their parents. Practices are after school. |
WSMS NewsOur news report can be seen on televisions throughout our school on Wednesday
mornings. The students who produce the news meet after school on Tuesday
in the computer lab. This club can teach you about video, sound, and other
technical things involved in running a newscast. This program is run by
Mrs. Walker, the computer teacher. |
Student CouncilStudent Council usually takes place on Thursday mornings during homeroom. The classes vote for their representatives after each person who was nominated gives a short speech. They usually discuss things such as spirit week or ways to improve the school. |
YearbookThe yearbook committee is made up of 20 students in grades 6-8. Students
who apply to be on this committee must have good writing skills and a
good eye for photography. Meetings take place every Wednesday from 2:00
p.m. – 3:00 p.m. beginning in the fall and ending in March. This
group develops amazing and original yearbooks. |
Peer HelpersPeer Helpers is for 7th & 8th grade students. To join, you will have to take a simple survey and a former peer helper will probably interview you. The advisor will make the final decision. Peer Helpers do activities such as helping new students, giving tours to incoming 5th graders, and other things that could help the school. |
Literary GroupsThe library staff in our school holds literary groups for 6th, 7th, and
8th graders. It is a fun activity if you like to read and meet new people.
The literary groups meet on different days depending on grade level right
after school until 2:45 p.m. If you are interested in joining the literary
group for your grade, see Mrs. Coffin in the library. |
Library LeadersThe library also holds Library Leaders meetings where you can meet new people and learn important library skills such as organizing books, checking books in and out, and computer skills. The meetings are after school from 2:00 – 2:45 p.m., on a date set by Mrs. Coffin and the president of the group. As a Library Leader, you schedule the day you will help out in the library during homeroom, and you can also volunteer to help during study halls. If you are interested in joining, see Mrs. Coffin in the library for an appointment. |
